On Sunday, June 22, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Boat People SOS will be hosting a Free Citizenship Workshop at the Vietnamese Community Center; 7100 Clarewood Dr.; Houston, TX 77036; (713) 272-8624.
While most of us are US citizens, there are still many in the Vietnamese and Chinese communities who are legal permanent residents, i.e., they cannot vote, they are ineligible to apply for certain jobs, and etc. Boat People SOS is looking for attorneys and other volunteers to assist those eligible (legal permanent residents for at least 4.9 years) to complete applications for naturalization at no charge.
If you can’t volunteer for this event, but would like to learn more about how to help, please read on:
One of the pillars of Boat People SOS’ work is fighting human trafficking and the exploitation of Vietnamese workers. BPSOS has been working to draw attention to how these workers are cheated, forced to work 16-hour shifts, and beaten by factory guards. The story is an ugly one, and these people need your help. Please check out the blog to learn more, and visit the “What Can I Do to Help?” page to take action. Any comments you make on the blog will be passed on to the workers themselves, to encourage them in this fight for their rights.
